Sewing has been a thing

I think it’s important to take a pause and give some background.

I have been sewing for a long time. I have good sewing skills that I have developed as I have taken on more and more complicated projects. So this post is a bit of a disclaimer and a justification. I didn’t just jump into this large sewing cosplay project without any experience. I started sewing in 2002 and I like it.

One of my first projects was a marionet puppet that was supposed to be a duck, but it resembled more of a chicken type creature. With large beady button eyes. A possessed chicken marionet…. Hahaha.

I remember sewing some simple bags, a pillow. I sewed a little plaid outfit with my mom. I made a skirt. I learned how to mend. I made a bedspread and I made my prom dress. I learned how to dye fabric.

But here’s the thing, I leveled up my sewing skills with each project and started from nothing just like everyone does. Looking back, each of those projects had major flaws and I have learned from them. And that’s great!

Later on, I grew into more skills and became confident in my own sewing preferences. I learned about pre-washing fabric, rolled hems, fusible interfacing, buttonhole stitches, zippers, and ironing seams. That knowledge was gained many years after I began. And there’s tons I am still learning, honing my skills, discovering my style.

Time, endurance, and enjoyment have been working in my favor. Here I am today making a custom cosplay costume and altering patterns.

Recently I’ve been having fun understanding my own preferences and figuring out why I like to build in certain features into my cosplay costumes.

Truly though, it started with a strange poultry puppet.
