Sylvie Loki: EVA Foam Bracers Part 2
Alright, now it’s time to add some EVA Foam accents to my arm bracers for Sylvie’s costume!
After I made the pattern for the bracers, I cut out the accents for the top of the forearm from EVA Foam.
The armor for Sylvie’s bracers is made in two pieces - one is the backing layer of foam, covered by a top layer that is the stacked circle accents.
After cutting them out, I used my Dremel tool to sand the shapes and provide some bevels around the edges of the cut foam pieces.
I made some “battle damage” from my Dremel tool to cover mistakes was a plus on this cosplay bracers build.
Then, when I was happy with the sanding job, I heated up the foam pieces gently with my heat gun and curved them, so they’d fit the barrel shape of my arm.
When I was happy with the general curve of the bracer armor piece, I sealed the foam with my heat gun too.
Then I put some painters tape around the bracers, allowed the bracers to cool down so they’d hold that nice concave shape.
Time for glue and priming!
I joined these two layers of 5mm high density EVA Foam and clued them together with contact cement.
I filled any gaps with Kwik Seal caulk and let that dry.
After that it was time for 3 coats of black Plasti Dip Spray paint. I do this outside, with my armor pieces taped to cardboard “handles” so I can move my EVA Foam bracers around as I spray paint. I wear disposable gloves too.
Next step is painting Sylvie’s bracers:
There are many kinds of flexible acyclic paints for cosplay builds, but here I am using FX metallics for Sylvie’s bracers.
I brushed on a couple layers of a very dark grey color called “Gauntlet” FX Armor Metallic.
Then I added some highlights with “Golden Hour” FX Armor Metallic paint as well.
Then it was time for several more layers painted of accents. I used high quality artist grade acrylics for this, in colors such as dark green, black, and warm gold.
Ta-da! Bracers done!
This gal is looking great, and I’m thrilled to be able to depict Loki like this. Sylvie is great character from Marvel Cinematic Universe in my opinion.
Okay no Marvel movie tangents today, Part 3 of this blog series is coming soon, and I’ll wrap up these EVA Foam bracers for Sylvie!
